“Three Springer Heads,” by noted animal portraitist Arthur Wardle (1860–1949). In the painting, two Welsh Springer Spaniels flank their English cousin.
In Britain, Welsh and English Springer Spaniels were considered one breed until 1902. The following is from The Essential Welsh Springer Spaniel (1985), by noted Welsh authority John Phillips:
“This breed has a scenting ability which is extremelystrong. Whether the strong nose comes from a greater infusion of original hound blood in its ancestry is another matter, but the extreme sensitivity to scent should be realized by the owner.
“In the household, then, the experience of living with a Welshie’s nose and energy, not to mention a group of them, is no genteel or languid pastime. Be warned that you will be left in no doubt that you have a real dog, and not a doormat! …
“A sense of humor, expressed as a love of games of all sorts, is another endearing feature of the breed. All pups enjoy play, but the Welshman manages to sustain his puppy attractiveness longer than many breeds. Though he seems dignified and even aloof at times, with his spaniel-sad face, he is never really gloomy, and delights in fun and frolic. …
